Street Families and Drug Abuse

Street Families and Drug Abuse

Drug abuse among street families rarely begins as recreational choice. It is a coping mechanism for a harsh environment.

  • Inhalants and Solvents: Glue and jet fuel are cheap, accessible, and suppress hunger pangs.
  • Prescription and Cheap Alcohol: Low-cost, unregulated substances numb physical pain and mental trauma.
  • Polydrug Use: Mixing substances creates a heavy haze to escape the daily reality of street life.

The Destructive Cycle

While substances offer temporary escape, they reinforce the cycle of homelessness.

  • Health Degradation: Chronic respiratory issues, liver damage, and severe mental health decline.
  • Child Vulnerability: Children born into street families witness and adopt abuse habits early.
  • Increased Violence: Substance dependency heightens aggression and exposes users to exploitation.
  • Barrier to Exit: Active addiction makes it nearly impossible to hold jobs or stay in shelters.
